What is Grief?

Grief is sitting outside on the balcony, watching people as they unload your loved one’s apartment from a truck, putting items down one by one - the carpet, the couch. It feels unreal, so you dissociate.
Then one random morning, you’re getting ready to go to work, and that image flashes in your brain. Your stomach sinks. Your breath slows down. You’re not getting enough oxygen, and your feet feel weak. You almost want to fall.
But the person standing next to you doesn’t know how heavy it is, because it happened a long time ago. They think you should be okay by now.
Maybe what we all need is someone to witness our pain. Just maybe.
